Ulster school bans 'picture mobiles'

ONE of Northern Ireland's largest schools has banned pupils fromusing "camera" phones as fears rise across the province over thepotential misuse of photos of children, it emerged today.

Increasingly, leisure centres have ruled against camera mobiles incase images are used by paedophiles on the Internet and now CambridgeHouse Grammar School in Ballymena, Co Antrim, is believed to be oneof the first schools to take such a step.

Elma Lutton, from Cambridge House, stressed that they have neverhad any such problems with camera phones but that they movedproactively to ensure the safety and privacy of children.

She said: "Children are children and they love the latestgadgetry. We are simply trying to mitigate the dangers of childrenbeing able to take unauthorised photographs."

Other schools have said they are keeping the possibility of banson the camera phones under review.

The North-Eastern Education and Library Board said such bans areup to the Governors at each school.
