Fed: Ministers tackle public liability
Assistant Treasurer HELEN COONAN says the federal government is poised to close publicliability law loopholes once states and territories introduce uniform laws.
Senator COONAN was speaking in Perth where she's discussing the thorny issue of publicliability insurance with state and territory ministers.
She says that over the past year, states and territories have made significant reformsrelating to public liability insurance which are paying dividends in stabilising the market.
But she says one remaining area which needs serious attention is professional indemnityinsurance.
Outside the meeting, Senator COONAN said the federal government would move to passchanges to the Trade Practices Act to close loopholes and ensure national uniformity ofpublic liability law.
However, she says that before the Commonwealth can do so, the states and territoriesneed to have uniform public liability laws.
