FED:Foreign affairs debate for next week

The election campaign will turn to foreign policy next week when foreign minister STEPHEN
SMITH takes on his opposite number JULIE BISHOP in a televised debate.

The foreign affairs spokespeople will go head-to-head at Canberra's National Press
Club next Thursday (August 12).

Foreign policy has not been a major election issue .. partly because there's bipartisan
agreement on key issues like keeping troops in Afghanistan .. and the importance of the
US alliance.

But there have been differences of opinion between the major parties on relations with
Israel .. and on whether Australia should bid for a temporary seat on the United Nations
Security Council.
